In 2018, email users worldwide sent over 280 billion emails per day, according to Statista. That number is expected to very soon, if not in 2019, go over 300 billion, and by 2023, it should come close to 350 billion by Statista email usage projections.
As you might have imagined, big email providers like Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo! Mail, and the like mostly lead the charge regarding email usage.
But here’s another, much more alarming statistic:
76% of businesses have reportedly been victims of an email phishing attack in 2018, says Retruster in its 2019 Phishing Statistics and Email Fraud Statistics report.
According to the same report, phishing attacks are behind 90% of data breaches, and the average cost of just one data breach is $3.86 million.
That has to make you wonder:
Am I using the most secure email provider?
Well, what email service do you use?
If your answer is “Gmail,” then the answer to our first question will be:
No, you are not using the most secure email hosting.
Last September, Google warned its users about a security problem that can affect 1.5 billion Gmail and Calendar users.
So, if not Gmail, then what is the most secure email provider in 2020?
You might hear others say differently, but we believe it’s Mailman.
And we can back up that claim!
About Mailman
Mailman is a 100% anonymous and open-source email service based in Iceland. It offers 4096-bit encryption with zero-knowledge password protection (meaning they don’t know your password and can’t access your decrypted data).
Although a newer service compared to others, Mailman already shows signs of being more than capable of protecting its user’s privacy and security. That’s made possible by a myriad of security features Mailman offers.
Also, since Iceland has one of Europe’s strongest privacy protection laws, Mailman is one of the most secure email hosting providers.
However, you’ll have to sign up for a paid plan or upgrade from the Free plan to enjoy many of these features. The Free plan still encrypts your contacts, content, and attachments and offers 2FA, anti-phishing, and brute force protection, to name a few features.
Paid pricing plans start from $8/m when billed yearly and when billed monthly $10/m

Encryption is Just a Tip of the Iceberg
You’ll often hear someone claim they are the most secure email service because they have “the strongest encryption” or something similar.
Now, that’s not to say that end-to-end encryption isn’t important in securing your email, far from it, but it’s not the only thing that matters.
At Mailman, we realize that, so we offer what we named “4 Wall Protection”.
What does this mean?
- 1st Wall: Metadata Protection
- Mailman is the only secure email provider that encrypts metadata.
- 2nd Wall: We are the only end-to-end encryption
- Mailman was the first to make its end-to-end encryption the very first “Zero Access” email platform.
- Our secure email service offers 4096-bit end-to-end encryption.
- 3rd Wall: Mailman has the strongest legal protection thanks to Icelandic privacy laws
- Iceland has no data retention laws for webmail.
- Iceland is not a part of the 14-Eyes coalition. We purposefully chose to host your data on servers in Iceland since the country is not a part of the “14-Eyes” and does not have to share its citizens’ private information with other group members. In addition, Iceland has no MLAT treatise.
- Iceland’s laws allow total anonymity.
- Mailman won’t turn over your data without a court order from Iceland; even then, the information will be encrypted.
- 4th Wall: Company
- We formed our company in Seychelles, which allows us maximum protection of company records in the world
- We don’t record any user data for corporate purposes.
- We are not owned or sponsored by any global corporation or government.
Why Do We Host Your Data on Servers in Iceland?
We are often asked why we chose Iceland of all countries to host our user’s data.
There are a couple of excellent reasons for that decision. We already covered most of them in this post, but the two most important ones are:
- Iceland has no data retention laws for webmail,
Once you delete an email, it stays deleted, and we keep no backups.
According to the Electronic Communications Act 81/2003, Internet Service Providers (ISP) are required to keep data for 6 months. Since Mailman is not an ISP, this doesn’t apply to our email service.
Even so, an ISP can only see when you visit Mailman’s site but not read your emails. And neither can Mailman.
- Iceland is not a part of the “14-Eyes.”
We purposefully chose to host your data on servers on Iceland since the country is not a part of the “14-Eyes” and does not have to share its citizens’ private information with other members of that group.
In addition, Iceland has no MLAT treatise. “14-Eyes” include United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand (“5-Eyes”), Denmark, Norway, France, Netherlands (“9-Eyes”), Germany, Spain, Italy, Sweden and Belgium (“14-Eyes”).
Unfortunately, many secure email providers have servers in one or the other “14-Eyes” group members. Mailman is one of the few that hosts your data on servers outside these countries.
Conclusion
We are fully committed to ensuring you get the privacy protection you need. Perhaps the claim to be the “most secure email provider” is a bit bold, but as you can see, we can back that up.
